“Why is This Happening to Me?” or “Why Am I Still Suffering With Hip & knee Pain After Putting Up With It For 6 Months (Maybe More)?"

Most people think that when they get Hip & Knee Pain, it’s just going to go away on it’s own.

That they’ll wake up one morning and like “magic”, it’ll be as if hip & knee pain never happened… But then 6 months later you’re still living with hip & knee pain – often even worse than it was when it came on.

who can be effected by Hip & Knee pain?

Another thing that we commonly treat here at Motus RX is lower extremity injuries and pain, which relates often to the hip and knee. Interestingly with the hip and knee, and similarly to the upper body, it’s necessary to identify what’s going on with the person as a whole, for example, if anything is coming from the lower back that could be causing pain further down the kinetic chain in the hip or knee.

A lot of individuals that have hip or knee pain will be runners, or active people that are doing a lot of squats, lunges, and exercises in the gym. Whether it’s football, soccer, baseball, golf, or any other sport, a lot of athletes will have hip or knee issues because of the stress constantly being placed on these joints. Losing time to those sports and having to be pulled out of the gym because of hip or knee issues is no good, and can take a mental toll on the individual.

how do we target your Hip & Knee pain?

For hip pain, the evaluation starts with identifying the root cause: is it the back, is it the hip, is it the knee, is it the feet? We figure out what that is first so that you’re not confused, providing much needed clarity on where the issue actually is, because the pain itself is not always where the issue truly lies.

With knee pain, again our approach starts with a very thorough evaluation. What’s interesting about the knee is that a lot of times the pain is at the knee, but we’ll find the problem is either above or below. Therefore, an exhaustive evaluation at the hip, and the foot and ankle are needed.

An analogy we use here at Motus is that the knee is like a train, and the whole leg is a train track. Often for people, there’s nothing actually wrong with the train, but there’s a lot wrong with the train track.

our process to target Hip & knee pain

We have to identify where on the track the problem lies, or in other words, where the pain is coming from. That is a major component in our evaluation: to identify where the issue truly is.

The next step in the process is to ‘put the fire out’. At Motus RX, we use things like dry needling, soft tissue work, scraping, and anything to help the soft tissue and the muscles in these areas calm down and reduce inflammation.

If there is an area that is particularly tight or stiff, we work on improving the range of motion because in the lower body, it is essential to have good available range of motion to squat, to lunge, and to run, to name just a few. That is the second focus.

Lastly, we focus on building back up with strength, and doing the right exercise in the right order is very important for things like hip and knee pain. We have to be on our feet a lot, so we must be very careful about the exercise selection and how we go about it because it’s easy to overdo or underdo certain things.

That final piece of the puzzle is making sure we build the lower body back up so that it’s resilient, strong, and able to handle everything that our active individuals and our athletes need to do.
